Some History: Henry Pinckney Hammett purchased the land for a cotton mill to utilize water power from the Saluda River, establishing the Piedmont Manufacturing Company in 1876, which became one of the largest in the state. In 1946, J.P. Stevens and Company purchased the mills, operating them until 1977. A major fire in 1983 destroyed much of the company, changing the town's landscape permanently. Today, the community is working to preserve its remaining history and revitalize its "small-town charm".
